Happy Women's Day 2013

Today, March 8 is International Women’s Day, and this year's theme commemorates the fight to end violence against women.

It was first celebrated on March 19, 1911 at a time when women were pressing for their right to work, vote, be trained, hold public office and end discrimination.

It wasn’t until 1975, during International Women's Year, that the United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day on 8 March.

Bollywood has often been slammed and accused of commodifying women. However, the industry has also given Indian celluloid some strong women characters over the years. As we celebrate Women's Day today.

The UN theme for International Women's Day 2013 is "A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women," while International Women's Day 2013 has declared the year's theme as The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum.
