New Zealand Announces Squad for ICC Mens T20 World Cup with Kane Williamson as Captain

On Monday, the Kiwis revealed their 15-player squad for the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup, set to take place in the USA and West Indies. The squad features an experienced lineup, with Kane Williamson leading the team for his sixth appearance and fourth as skipper. Fast bowlers Tim Southee and Trent Boult are also included, marking their seventh and fifth T20 World Cup appearances, respectively.

Notable Selections and Omissions

The squad announcement brought no major surprises, with key pacer Kyle Jamieson and all-rounder Adam Milne ruled out due to injuries. Despite some recent good form against the white-ball, Will O’Rourke, Tom Latham, Tim Seifert, and Will Young did not make the cut.

Experienced top-order batter Colin Munro was not included in the squad, while young gun Rachin Ravindra and fast bowler Matt Henry were selected as the two players yet to previously appear at a T20 World Cup. Ben Sears, a young pacer, will join the team as a traveling reserve.

Coach’s Remarks

Gary Stead, New Zealand’s coach, expressed his confidence in the selected squad, emphasizing its balance and adaptability to various conditions. Stead is particularly excited to see how Henry and Ravindra perform on the big stage, as they make their T20 World Cup debuts.

New Zealand’s first match will be against Afghanistan in Guyana on June 7, followed by Group C contests with co-hosts West Indies, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea.
