The blockbuster film “Jailer” has shattered records as the biggest opener in the history of the Tamil film industry, both nationally and internationally. In a mere span of three days, it has garnered a staggering USD 12.20 million (approximately Rs. 100 crores). This phenomenal feat surpasses the previous leader, “Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1,” which raked in USD 12.35 million in its opening weekend. Notably, “Jailer” achieved this milestone even with the third day being a weekday Thursday, unlike the weekend release of its predecessor.
The film commenced its triumphant journey with a robust start, amassing USD 4.70 million on Thursday. It maintained its momentum remarkably, garnering USD 3.40 million on Friday. Building upon its initial success, “Jailer” continued to thrive, crossing the USD 4 million mark on Saturday, fueled by robust growth in all market segments. This robust performance is a testament to its positive reception and strong box office appeal.
Leading the charge, North America emerged as the film’s top-performing market, contributing nearly USD 4 million to the total in just three days. Meanwhile, the Middle East witnessed outstanding success, amassing USD 3.35 million, setting a new precedent for Tamil films. The Malaysian audience, known for their affinity towards Tamil cinema, played a pivotal role, shattering weekend records with gross collections of RM 7.50 million plus in just three days. Saturday alone amassed RM 3 million plus, a historic milestone for an Indian film. This trend of success extended to other markets across the globe.
The worldwide gross earnings of “Jailer” have crossed the remarkable milestone of Rs. 200 crores, with an approximate total of Rs. 216 crores to date. As the extended four-day weekend concludes, it is expected to approach the Rs. 300 crores mark. Bolstered by its current performance, the film is poised to effortlessly surpass Rs. 400 crores, with Rs. 450 crores firmly within reach. Speculation now surrounds whether it will break the Rs. 500 crores barrier, with much hinging on its post-Independence day performance. Thus far, the signs remain overwhelmingly positive.
