More than half of young workers, aged 16 to 24, have reportedly taken sick leave in the past six months due to mental health issues, according to recent research. This alarming figure highlights the rising importance of addressing mental health problems in the workplace.
Stress and Anxiety Affecting Young Workers
The survey, conducted by Unmind, a company dedicated to creating mentally healthy workplaces, found that among the 16 to 24-year-olds surveyed, 56 percent needed time off due to stress, anxiety, and depression. This indicates that a significant portion of young workers is struggling with their mental well-being.
Concerns Across Different Age Groups
The impact of mental health problems extends beyond young workers. The research reveals that 33 percent of employees aged 45-54 and 12 percent of those over the age of 55 also required sick leave for similar reasons. These findings highlight the need for mental health support across all age groups in the workforce.
Contemplating Leaving Work Due to Mental Health
The survey further uncovered a concerning trend. One-third of the participants admitted to considering quitting their jobs entirely due to mental health concerns. This emphasizes the urgency for employers to prioritize mental well-being and create supportive environments for their employees.

Official figures indicate that a staggering 2.6 million people are currently on sick leave due to various illnesses. While the number encompasses all illnesses, it underscores the significant impact mental health issues have on the workforce.
